Why does gelcoat oxidize and chalk?
Gelcoat is a pigmented polyester resin. UV breaks down the resin at the surface, so the boat loses gloss first, then fades, then chalks to a powder that comes off on your hand (West Marine, Practical Sailor). Salt spray holds moisture and contaminants against the surface and speeds the process. How fast depends on latitude, storage, and washing, not a calendar.
Why does the compound-and-wax cycle wear a hull out?
Wax itself does not remove gelcoat. The compounding and polishing done before each wax does, and gelcoat is only a few tens of mils thick to begin with. West Marine's guidance is to have gelcoat thickness measured before another full restoration once topsides have been aggressively compounded for more than about ten seasons. A sacrificial coating takes the UV and wash abuse so the gelcoat is not compounded again every spring. Same principle on cars: does polishing remove clear coat?
How does Revivify behave on a boat?
It bonds to gelcoat, fiberglass, painted aluminum, and glass, cures flexible, and reflows light scratches and dock rash closed with heat, which a boat in the sun gets for free. It is hydrophobic, so salt and mineral deposits release with a fresh-water rinse. It is applied only by a certified marine applicator and registered with a multi-year warranty. Can Revivify go over oxidized gelcoat?
No. The installer removes the oxidation first, the same way paint correction precedes a car coating. The coating locks in the corrected finish.
Does it work below the waterline?
Revivify is a topside, deck, and hull-side coating. It is not an antifouling bottom paint.
How is marine pricing set?
By surface area and condition. Marine jobs run higher than a car of similar length; a certified installer quotes from photos and measurements.
