What is the best protection for thin factory paint?
The best protection for thin factory paint is a sacrificial layer that takes damage in the paint's place and can be repaired without polishing the clear coat. For most drivers that is a self-healing protective coating like Revivify, which cures roughly 8 to 10 times thicker than a ceramic, stays flexible, and heals wash marks with heat, for about $1,200 to $5,500 installed. If you drive a lot of highway miles, add paint protection film on the front end for rock chips ($1,500 to $3,500 for a full front). A traditional ceramic coating is the budget option at roughly $800 to $2,500 professionally installed, but it cannot heal and comes off with a light polish.

What is thin factory paint up against?
The total paint film on a modern car is roughly 90 to 150 microns (3.5 to 6 mils), with only about 30 to 50 microns of clear coat on top (EngineerFix, Detailer Made). Some vehicles read as low as 2.5 mils. That clear coat is the only layer between the color and UV, chemicals, road debris, corrosion, and car washes. Why not just use a ceramic coating?
A ceramic adds hardness, which resists light marring. But it is rigid, so it cannot heal, and at 0.5 to 2 microns it is thin enough that most ceramics come off with a light polish, which also takes a little clear coat. Why not just use paint protection film?
"Film is still the best money can buy for rock chips," says Mel Craig, President of Revivify America. "But it isn't in everyone's budget, and when film wears or fails it can't be repaired, only replaced, at real expense." Film also shows edges, and it is rarely used on marine or aviation surfaces. Where does a self-healing coating fit?
"Revivify sits between a ceramic and paint protection film," Craig says. "The thickness and the self-healing, at a price that fits most budgets." Which should you choose?
- Daily driver, normal roads, keeping the car 3+ years: Revivify over the whole vehicle. Most owners land here.
- High-mileage highway commuter or gravel roads: PPF on the hood, bumper, fenders, and mirrors, plus Revivify everywhere including over the film.
- Short ownership (1 to 2 years) on a tight budget: A ceramic coating, accepting that swirls are permanent until polished.
- Boat, aircraft, or equipment: Revivify; film is not typical on those surfaces.
What is the one thing every option has in common?
None is 100 percent. "We drive at 80 miles an hour," Craig says. "Damage will happen eventually. The difference is whether it's a quick fix or a full repaint." Correct the paint once, protect it, and stop polishing. Get a quote from a certified applicator.

Does ceramic coating prevent scratches?
It resists light marring because it cures hard, but it does not prevent scratches and cannot repair them. Once a ceramic is scratched it stays scratched until it is polished off.
Should I protect a brand-new car?
Yes, and sooner is better. New paint has the least damage to correct, so the coating goes on with minimal polishing and the clear coat stays at full thickness.
Is it worth combining PPF and a coating?
For high-mileage or high-value cars, yes. PPF on the hood, bumper, fenders, and mirrors for rock chips, and Revivify over the whole vehicle including the film for self-healing, UV, and chemical protection. Use a coating the film maker approves for use over PPF.
What does a full-front PPF install cost?
