Self-healing coating vs ceramic coating: what's the difference?

What is the core chemistry difference?
Ceramic coatings are silica (SiO₂) based, the same molecular family as glass. They cure into a hard, brittle film on top of the paint, typically 0.5 to 2 microns thick. Revivify is a urethane-based self-healing coating. Why does thickness matter on modern paint?
OEM clear coat is only about 30 to 50 microns, on a total paint film of roughly 90 to 150 microns (Detailer Made). Every polish removes 1 to 3 microns of it, more for compounding. A ceramic that comes off with a light polish means another round of polishing each time it is renewed. What does 'self-healing' actually mean?
Light swirls and wash marks press a groove into the coating. Heat from sunlight, hot water at 130 to 160°F, or a heat gun makes the urethane reflow and close the groove, typically in 5 to 15 minutes. Can you put ceramic over Revivify, or Revivify over ceramic?

For short ownership (1 to 2 years) on a tight budget, or if you want a DIY product, ceramic still makes sense. For everything else the self-healing coating outperforms.
Can I apply Revivify over an existing ceramic coating?
No. The chemistries do not bond well. The existing ceramic is polished off first, which your certified installer handles.
