How thick is automotive clear coat?
Automotive clear coat is about 30 to 50 microns thick, or 1.2 to 2 mils, on most modern vehicles. The entire factory paint system it sits on, including e-coat, primer, base color, and clear coat, measures roughly 90 to 150 microns (3.5 to 6 mils), and some vehicles read as low as 2.5 mils. For comparison, a sheet of copy paper is about 100 microns, or 4 mils. The clear coat is the only layer protecting the color from UV, chemicals, road debris, and car washes, and it is the layer that polishing removes.

What are the layers of factory automotive paint?
Modern factory paint is a stack of four layers over the bare metal (NIST, OEM paint materials and processes):

How thick is the whole paint stack?
Paint-gauge references put the total film on a modern car at about 90 to 150 microns, or 3.5 to 6 mils (EngineerFix). A mil is one thousandth of an inch, or 25.4 microns. Readings vary by manufacturer, panel, and color, and aluminum panels often read lower than steel. "The entire paint system on a modern car can be as little as two and a half mils, and averages four to five," says Mel Craig, President of Revivify America. "And that's everything: rust inhibitor, primer, base color, and the clear coat on top."
How thick is the clear coat by itself?
About 30 to 50 microns, or 1.2 to 2 mils, is the commonly cited range for OEM clear coat, with some paint systems running up to roughly 80 microns (Detailer Made). A paint depth gauge reads the total thickness over the metal and cannot separate the clear coat from the layers under it, so no gauge tells you exactly how much clear you have left. What is certain is that it is a thin slice of an already thin stack.
Why does clear coat thickness matter?
The clear coat is the only layer between the color and UV, chemicals, road debris, corrosion, and every trip through a car wash. When it is thin, swirl marks, wash scratches, and etching reach the color faster, and there is less margin for a detailer to polish damage out. What should you do with thin clear coat?
Protect it before you correct it again. One light correction to remove factory defects is normal; repeated polishing is not. After correction, add a sacrificial layer so future wash marks land in the coating instead of the clear coat. How can I measure my own paint thickness?
A paint depth gauge reads the total thickness of everything on top of the metal (e-coat, primer, base, clear). It cannot isolate the clear coat alone. Professional paint correction shops measure every panel before polishing so they know how much margin they have.
Is there a safe minimum paint thickness?
There is no official OEM number. Detailers commonly treat total readings under about 80 to 90 microns as a caution zone, and a rule of thumb is to never remove more than 20 to 25 percent of the original clear coat over the car's life.
Does a coating add thickness to the paint?
