How self-healing chemistry works

Traditional ceramic coatings create a hard, glass-like sacrificial layer on top of paint. When that layer takes a scratch, the damage is permanent — the only fix is to remove the coating and reapply.

Self-healing coatings work differently. They use flexible protective coating polymers that maintain elastic memory. When light damage occurs (swirl marks, micro-scratches, brush marks from wash media), the coating retains the imprint until heat is applied. Heat causes the protective coating to soften slightly and reflow back to its original molecular orientation — effectively erasing the damage.

What kind of damage self-heals?

• Wash-induced swirl marks
• Micro-scratches from automatic car washes
• Brush marks from wash media
• Light fingernail scratches
• Salt-induced dulling

What does NOT self-heal

Self-healing is not magic. Damage that breaks through to the underlying paint — rock chips that pierce the coating, deep keying, accidents — cannot self-heal because the substrate itself is damaged. Self-healing coatings are designed for surface-level wear, not paint-penetrating damage.

How heat triggers healing

Three common heat sources:

• Sunlight: A few hours in direct sun typically heals minor swirls on the hood and roof.
• Hot water: Pouring water from a kettle (not boiling) over the damaged area triggers immediate healing.
• Heat gun: Professional applicators use heat guns on a low setting for spot healing on vertical surfaces.

How long until I notice the healing?

Healing isn't instant. Minor swirls typically vanish within 5–15 minutes of heat exposure. Deeper micro-scratches may need a longer heat cycle. Repeated exposure to heat over a day or two often completes the healing process for stubborn damage.
